FONS - Friends of Newborough School

Who are Friends of Newborough School and why does it exist?

Friends of Newborough School (FONS) is an organisation of parents who aim to provide closer links between home and school, bringing staff, parents and children together in support of the school.  Fundraising is, of course, a large part of the FONS activities and to date we have raised thousands of pounds, which have been spent on improving equipment and resources to enhance the children’s education and the facilities in school.

Since we are a small school, the success of the FONS does depend on parents getting involved even if they only have a small amount of time available.

Raising Money and having Fun

We are always open to ideas for raising money. Regular events include our Christmas and May Day Fayres, as well as the ever popular Easter Eggstravaganza Raffle and the Class Coin Challenge. So there is always lots going on, that we’re sure many of you could help with or participate in.  Just how many events we hold and the nature of them depends to a large extent on you.  You are the Friends of Newborough School!

For the year ending August 2017 we raised £4,340.92, this money helped to fund the following:

School Lighting, Reception Book Bags, Leaver’s T-shirts, Climbing Wall, Wrist Bands, Class Donation of £300 each

None of this would be possible without the support of friends and family of children at Newborough School – so thank you for your continued support.

How we spend the money we raise

Once money is raised from an event, the funds are banked straight away.  It is at our Committee Meetings that the decision on how to spend the money is agreed. We will meet with Mrs Marrs to discuss what she would like for the school and how we can help.  Sometimes this will be as a result of the children asking for something, other times it will be for resources to improve a particular area of the curriculum or school environment.  In the main, the funds are for the ‘extra’ not provided by the school budget, that makes our children’s learning experiences so much more fulfilling and exciting.

FONS meet on an ad hoc basis when events are being organised and planning is needed, with the exception of the AGM.  Our Annual General Meeting is held in February of each year and this is an opportunity for all parents to come along and hear in more detail about the events we run, funds raised and how the money has been spent.  It is also the occasion when we elect our new committee and recruit new members.

FONS have a core Committee made up of 4 roles (Chair, Vice Chair, Treasurer and Secretary) and they are then supported by any other members who can help in anyway – no matter how much or little time they offer – we are grateful for any help.

How we get information to you

Letters will be sent home, or via parentmail, to keep you up to date with forthcoming events.  Please keep an eye on the FONS noticeboard in the playground also – this will have the totals of monies raised at any recent event, information about how money is spent and what’s coming up.

How can you get involved?

There are lots of ways you can help and support your child through the Friends.

  • Offering to help before events or at other times during the year – it really is a case of ‘many hands make light work’.  It doesn’t matter if you can’t help on a regular basis, or even if you can’t come into school. There are always little jobs that can be done from home if you have half an hour to spare.
  • Persuading employers / friends / contacts to donate prizes for raffles, things to sell at the fayres.
  • Attending events, buying tickets etc are also good ways of contributing.
  • You can, if you feel able, volunteer to be a committee member.
  • Or, you can simply support the AGM and give us your ideas for fundraising events – this is also the time to ask questions or voice your opinion.
