Geography

At Newborough CofE Primary School, we want children to be curious about the world around them and develop a strong sense of their place within it. Our geography curriculum helps pupils build knowledge of their local area, the United Kingdom and the wider world, while exploring the people, places, environments and processes that make each unique.

Through engaging geographical enquiry, children learn to ask questions, investigate places and make connections between human and physical geography. We want pupils to understand that our world is interconnected and continually changing, developing the knowledge and skills they need to explore it thoughtfully, confidently and with respect for different places, people and environments.

Fieldwork is an important part of geography at Newborough, giving children opportunities to take their learning beyond the classroom, observe the world first-hand and apply their geographical knowledge and skills in meaningful contexts.

What do we teach?

Our geography curriculum develops children's knowledge and skills progressively from EYFS to Year 6. Children begin by exploring their immediate surroundings and gradually broaden their understanding to include the United Kingdom, Europe and the wider world.

Children develop locational and place knowledge, learning where significant places and features are and what makes them distinctive. They explore human and physical geography, including settlements, land use, weather and climate, rivers, mountains, natural resources and the processes that shape our planet. Through comparisons between places, children consider how environments and communities are similar, different and interconnected.

Alongside this knowledge, children progressively develop important geographical skills. They learn to use maps, atlases, globes, aerial photographs and digital mapping; develop their understanding of direction, scale and grid references; collect and interpret geographical information; and communicate their findings in increasingly sophisticated ways.

Fieldwork provides opportunities for children to observe, measure, record and investigate geographical features first-hand. As they progress through the school, pupils learn to ask increasingly purposeful geographical questions, gather evidence and use what they discover to draw conclusions about places and environments.

How do we support every learner?

We want every child to be able to explore, investigate and make sense of the world through geography. Teaching is adapted where appropriate so that all pupils, including those with SEND, can access geographical learning while maintaining ambitious expectations for everyone.

Teachers use maps, photographs, diagrams, models, video and first-hand experiences to make geographical concepts and places more accessible. Key vocabulary is explicitly taught and revisited, while visual prompts, word banks, sentence structures and carefully selected resources can support children in communicating their geographical understanding.

During fieldwork and practical activities, tasks, equipment and recording methods can be adapted to enable all children to participate meaningfully. Prior learning is regularly revisited so that pupils can make connections between places, processes and concepts and build increasingly secure geographical knowledge over time.
