At Newborough CE Primary School, we want every child to develop confidence, fluency and enjoyment in mathematics. Our curriculum supports pupils to build secure mathematical knowledge, develop efficient calculation strategies and become confident problem-solvers who can reason and explain their thinking.

We use the White Rose Maths scheme of learning as the foundation for our curriculum, providing a carefully sequenced journey from EYFS to Year 6. This is supplemented by a range of high-quality mathematical resources and teacher-led activities to provide a comprehensive maths offer, respond to pupils’ needs and ensure regular opportunities for fluency, reasoning and problem-solving. Through revisiting and building upon prior learning, we aim to develop secure and lasting mathematical understanding.

What do we teach?

Our mathematics curriculum develops children’s understanding progressively from EYFS through to Year 6. Children build strong foundations in number and place value before developing increasingly efficient methods for calculation and applying their knowledge across a broad range of mathematical areas.

In EYFS, children develop a secure understanding of number, numerical patterns, shape, space and measure through practical exploration and purposeful play.

In Key Stage 1, children build strong number sense and develop their understanding of place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. They are also introduced to fractions, measurement, geometry and statistics.

In Lower Key Stage 2, children work with increasingly larger numbers and develop greater fluency with the four operations. They deepen their understanding of multiplication and division, fractions and decimals, while extending their learning in measurement, geometry and statistics.

In Upper Key Stage 2, children develop greater fluency and independence, working with increasingly complex calculations and applying their understanding of fractions, decimals and percentages. Their learning extends to ratio and proportion, algebra, geometry, measurement and statistics, with an increasing emphasis on reasoning and solving more complex problems.

Throughout their time at Newborough, children are encouraged to make connections between different areas of mathematics, explain their thinking and apply their knowledge confidently in a range of contexts.

How do we support every learner?

We believe that all children can succeed in mathematics and provide appropriate support and challenge to enable every pupil to make progress. Teachers use the Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract (CPA) approach, allowing children to explore mathematical concepts using practical manipulatives, such as place value counters, dienes and bead strings, before representing their understanding visually and moving towards abstract methods and notation.

For pupils with SEND, teachers identify potential barriers to learning and make appropriate adaptations while maintaining ambitious expectations. This may include breaking learning into smaller steps, providing additional modelling or guided practice, revisiting prerequisite knowledge, using consistent visual representations and mathematical vocabulary, and allowing continued access to manipulatives where these support understanding. Adaptations are responsive to individual need and are designed to help every child access, participate in and make progress through our mathematics curriculum.
