PE

At Newborough CofE Primary School, we want every child to develop the confidence, skills and enjoyment needed to lead a healthy and active life. Our PE curriculum provides regular opportunities for children to be active, develop physical competence and experience the enjoyment of sport and physical activity.

Through a broad range of activities, children develop fundamental movement skills, teamwork, resilience and an understanding of how physical activity supports their physical and mental wellbeing. We encourage pupils to challenge themselves, celebrate improvement and experience both individual and team activities, helping them to develop positive attitudes towards physical activity that can continue beyond their time at Newborough.

We work alongside specialist coaches from Youth Dreams Project (YDP) to enhance our PE and lunchtime provision and support the delivery of high-quality physical education across the school. Children receive two hours of curriculum PE each week, complemented by opportunities to be active through lunchtime provision, clubs and wider sporting experiences.

What do we teach?

Our PE curriculum develops progressively from EYFS to Year 6, enabling children to build their physical skills, knowledge, confidence and understanding over time. Younger children develop fundamental movement skills such as running, jumping, throwing, catching, balance and coordination before learning to apply these skills with increasing control and accuracy.

As children progress through the school, they experience a broad range of physical activities, including games, gymnastics, dance and athletics, alongside opportunities for outdoor and adventurous activity. Pupils learn how to work individually and collaboratively, develop tactics and strategies, perform with increasing control and evaluate their own performance.

Competition is introduced appropriately through lessons and wider sporting opportunities, with children encouraged to value teamwork, fair play, resilience and personal improvement as well as achievement.

In Key Stage 2, children are also taught swimming and water safety, with the aim that pupils leave primary school able to swim confidently and understand how to keep themselves safe in and around water.

For further information about the PE taught in each year group, please see our PE Curriculum Overview below.

How do we support every learner?

We want every child to participate successfully in PE and experience the physical, social and emotional benefits of being active. Lessons are inclusive and adapted where necessary so that all pupils, including those with SEND, can access learning, develop their skills and experience success while maintaining ambitious expectations.

Teachers consider individual strengths and potential barriers when planning and delivering PE. Activities may be adapted through changes to equipment, space, rules, groupings, level of challenge or the way skills are modelled and practised. Children are given opportunities to develop at an appropriate pace, build confidence and recognise their own progress and achievements.

We promote an inclusive culture in which children learn to work collaboratively, respect one another and understand that success in PE can look different for different individuals. All pupils are encouraged to participate, challenge themselves and develop a positive relationship with physical activity.

Being Active at Newborough

We recognise that being active extends beyond PE lessons. Children have opportunities to participate in physical activity throughout the school week, including organised lunchtime activities, extra-curricular clubs and sporting opportunities.

Our partnership with Youth Dreams Project (YDP) further enhances our provision, with specialist coaches supporting curriculum PE and providing additional opportunities for pupils to be active. We want children to experience a variety of sports and activities so that they can discover ways of being active that they enjoy and may choose to continue beyond primary school.

Please visit our School Clubs page for details of our current extra-curricular offer.

Competition and Sporting Opportunities

Children have opportunities to experience competition both within school and through wider sporting events. We aim to provide opportunities for pupils with different interests, strengths and levels of experience to represent Newborough and participate in competitive sport.

Through competition, children learn about teamwork, fair play, resilience and responding positively to both success and disappointment. Alongside competitive opportunities, we celebrate personal improvement and encourage children to recognise their own progress.

PE Kit and Keeping Safe

Children are taught how to participate safely and responsibly in physical activity. Staff follow agreed health and safety procedures and ensure that activities, equipment and spaces are appropriate for the learning taking place.

Children should come to school with the appropriate PE kit on their designated PE days. Long hair should be tied back and jewellery should be removed for PE in accordance with the Uniform Policy.

Information about PE days can be found on the class pages.
