PSHRE

At Newborough CofE Primary School, our PSHRE curriculum supports children to become confident, healthy and responsible individuals who are equipped to navigate relationships, make informed choices and play a positive role in their communities. We provide a safe and supportive environment in which children can develop their understanding of themselves and others, ask questions and explore the opportunities and challenges they may encounter as they grow.

Our curriculum develops the knowledge, skills and attitudes children need to build positive relationships, look after their physical and mental wellbeing, stay safe and understand the wider world around them. Learning is carefully sequenced and age-appropriate, responding to the needs of our pupils while preparing them for the next stage of their lives.

What do we teach?

Our PSHRE curriculum brings together Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education with the statutory requirements for Relationships Education and Health Education. Learning is carefully sequenced so that children revisit and build upon important knowledge and skills as they progress through the school.

Children learn about families and friendships, respectful relationships, physical and mental wellbeing, keeping safe, growing and changing, and their responsibilities within the wider world. They develop an age-appropriate understanding of boundaries, healthy relationships and how to seek help, alongside the knowledge and skills needed to make safe and informed choices.

Our curriculum also reflects the world in which children are growing up. Pupils learn how to behave safely and responsibly online, consider the impact of technology on wellbeing, think critically about information they encounter and understand issues such as privacy, online relationships, gaming and financial risks.

Relationships and health education are taught in accordance with the statutory guidance, alongside our wider PSHE curriculum. Age-appropriate sex education is taught in the later stages of primary school, complementing learning within the National Curriculum for Science and preparing pupils for the physical and emotional changes of adolescence. When RSE is taught, the materials and content will be shared with families in advance, providing an opportunity to discuss the learning at home; we encourage parents and carers to contact the school with any questions or queries.

How do we support every learner?

We recognise that children bring different experiences, levels of understanding and individual needs to PSHRE. Teaching is adapted sensitively to ensure that learning is accessible and meaningful for all pupils, including those with SEND, while maintaining ambitious expectations for everyone.

Teachers may adapt language, resources and activities, provide additional visual support, revisit important concepts or break learning into smaller steps where appropriate. Particular care is taken when teaching sensitive content, ensuring that children feel safe, know how to seek help and have opportunities to ask questions in an appropriate and supportive environment.
