Reading
At Newborough CofE Primary School, we want every child to become a confident, fluent reader who understands what they read and develops a love of books.
What do we teach?
EYFS, Year 1 and the beginning of Year 2
In EYFS, Year 1 and the Autumn Term of Year 2, reading skills are primarily taught through our Little Wandle reading groups. Children read carefully matched books, developing their phonics knowledge, fluency and comprehension.
For further information about the teaching of phonics, please visit this page.
Reading skills are also taught during Writing lessons, using the class text. Children develop their ability to retrieve information, make simple inferences, sequence events and explore characters, settings and vocabulary, building their overall understanding of the text.
From Spring Term in Year 2 and throughout KS2
From the Spring Term in Year 2, children move on to daily whole-class reading lessons. These are built around high-quality texts, with explicit teaching of vocabulary and background knowledge to support understanding.
Through shared reading, discussion and teacher modelling, children develop important reading skills such as retrieval, inference, prediction and visualisation. They explore the meaning of unfamiliar vocabulary, learn to use clues within a text to deepen their understanding and develop their ability to find and explain information using evidence from what they have read.
Children also learn how to answer different types of comprehension questions. Teachers model strategies and provide opportunities for children to practise with support before applying their skills independently.
As children progress through the school, there is an increasing focus on independent reading and comprehension. They develop their reading stamina, accuracy, fluency and expression, learning to read with confidence and understanding.
Our approach combines high-quality shared texts, explicit teaching and independent practice to develop the skills, confidence and enjoyment needed to become lifelong readers.
How do we support every learner?
At Newborough, we carefully monitor every child's reading development so that teaching can be adapted to meet their individual needs. Regular assessment helps us identify gaps and provide the right support at the right time.
Children who need additional support with phonics receive targeted teaching through Little Wandle Keep-up, Rapid Catch-up or the SEND programme, depending on their individual needs. Further information can be found on the Phonics page.
In KS2, the structure of our reading lessons allows teachers to continually check children's understanding and identify particular reading skills that need further development. Teaching can then be adapted to provide additional modelling, practice or challenge. Vocabulary and background knowledge are taught explicitly to ensure that all children can access and understand the texts they are reading. Children are supported to practise new skills before applying them independently, while those who are ready for further challenge are encouraged to explore texts more deeply and explain their ideas using evidence.
This ensures that every child is supported and challenged from their individual starting point, helping them to become confident, fluent and independent readers.
